BARRY McGEE / ED TEMPLETON / RAYMOND PETTIBON GROUP EXHIBITION

Barry McGee, Ed Templeton and Raymond Pettibon are pioneers and icons of the contemporary urban art movement. Their work can be found in the collections of major museums and has been shown at large exhibitions and biennales worldwide, but all three have repeatedly emphasised their roots in youth subculture – in the worlds of skateboarding, graffiti, punk and hip-hop.
These three sought-after artists are brought together by curator Aaron Rose, whose urban art documentary Beautiful Losers is currently touring the world, in the intimate atmosphere of Berlins Circleculture Gallery.

RAYMOND PETTIBON - ART & PUNK LEGEND

Raymond Pettibon’s drawings and paintings are mainly focused on the themes of personal and social upheaval, wartime life and the individual’s ongoing struggle with his or her fate. Drawing on cartoons and comics, he explores the tension between image and text and combines references to ‘high culture’ with the icons of pop and trash culture. His work can be viewed as an archive of late twentieth century American cultural history, a gallery of images that again and again illuminate the dark sides of the American way of life. He earned cult status with his early work in the Los Angeles punk scene, designing record covers, posters and fanzines for groups like Sonic Youth and Black Flag. He has now acquired an international reputation as one of the leading contemporary American artists.

ED TEMPLETON FOR BEAUTIFUL LOSERS

Ed Templeton is a painter, photographer, writer and collagist. The former skateboard world champion also creates designs for his skateboard company, Toy Machine. The recurrent themes of Templeton’s work are adolescence and teenage life in what he calls the ‘suburban domestic incubator’. He portrays and documents the quotidian existences and social worlds of teenagers with the topics that interest them most: skateboarding, drugs, love and sex. His images perfectly illustrate the brutal alienation of teenage life.

BARRY MCGEE & MARGARET KILGALLEN / ART:21

Portrait of Barry McGee and Margaret Kilgallen from the Art:21 television series, which focus exclusively on contemporary visual art and artists in the United States. It allows the viewer to observe the artists at work, watch their process as they transform inspiration into art, and hear their thoughts as they grapple with the physical and visual challenges of achieving their artistic visions. Circleculture Gallery is proud to show Barry McGee‘ s work from 9th April in a group show together with Raymond Pettibon and Ed Templeton.

Barry McGee (1968-) comes from a background of creating unsanctioned work on city streets in his native San Francisco. Originally signing his works with the tag “Twist”, the artist draws his force and inspiration from the contrast and tension that exists between the city center and the suburbs, between wealthy districts and the slums. McGee’s signature tags and markings have inserted an element of the individual and the handmade into a depersonalized urban landscape that has become increasingly crowded with corporate logos, trademarks and advertisements. McGee’s complex installations convey a sense of vitality and chaos, juxtaposed with a precarious nature and sense of alienation. Large-scale wall murals, clusters of small, framed drawings and snapshots, various tools and other street detritus make their way into his installations in an almost symphonic fashion. McGee has exhibited his works internationally including Deitch Projects, New York, UCLA Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, Foundation Cartier, Paris, and Fondazione Prada, Milan. McGee currently lives and works in San Francisco, California.
